Agriculture is one of the oldest economic activities in the world and continues to be a vital sector in many economies today. Agriculture not only provides food and fiber for people and animals, but also generates employment opportunities for a large number of people across the globe.

The agricultural sector employs a significant proportion of the world’s working population – an estimated 1.3 billion people, which is nearly one-third of the global workforce. In developing countries, the share of the agricultural workforce is even higher, at around 40%. Agriculture also plays an important role in rural employment, especially in developing countries.

The sector’s contribution to employment is expected to remain strong in the coming years. The UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) projects that the agricultural workforce will need to expand by nearly 1% each year to meet the global demand for food, fuel, and fiber by 2050. This growth is expected to be driven by population growth, changes in diets, and the continued expansion of the biofuels industry.

With the right policies and investments in place, agriculture can continue to be a major source of employment and economic growth around the world.
