It’s no secret that the United States has experienced a recent decline in the number of jobs in the agricultural sector. In fact, according to the most recent data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, only 1% of the country’s workforce is employed in agriculture-related jobs. This is a far cry from the early days of the country when the agricultural sector made up a much larger percentage of the workforce. So, what has caused this decline? There are a number of factors, but the two most often cited are the mechanization of agriculture and the outsourcing of food production to other countries.<\/p>\n

According to the United States Department of Agriculture, in 2012, 1.1 percent of all workers in the United States were employed in agriculture-related occupations.<\/p>\n

The FAO has released a report highlighting the importance of the agricultural sector in both employment and economic growth.<\/p>\n

The report notes that agriculture employs 27% of the world’s workforce and generates 4% of global GDP. It also highlights the sector’s contribution to food security and nutrition, as well as its role in environmental protection.<\/p>\n
